Why Zanzibar is "The Best One of a Kind" Destination in Africa

Zanzibar is an archipelago consisting of some 25 islands off the east coast of the Tanzanian mainland with Unjuja being the main island, however most tourists refer to the main island as Zanzibar itself and that names seems to have stuck with the foreigners.  Islam is the dominant religion on the islands and everyone seems to get along very well although the wearing of skimpy clothing away from the beach resorts is not recommended.  Zanzibar is a very special place in many respects.

When Europe was still floundering in the dark ages, the Zanzibar Archipelago was a flourishing centre for Indian, Arab and African merchants trading goods as far away as China.  That diversity and influence is still evident today.  Zanzibar was once the center for the slave trade on the east side of Africa, and is still a large exporter of spices although tourism is now the largest segment of the economy.

Much of the interaction back in the day took place in historical "Stone Town", the ancient portion of what is now Zanzibar City.  Stone Town has been designated a World Heritage Site and the town is still a vibrant city of narrow streets winding tightly amongst old homes, schools, mosques, museums, markets, landmarks, ruins, restaurants and shops.

 The history and way of life here is very foreign to North Americans which is why so many find a visit here so fascinating.

The other aspect that makes Zanzibar so special are the resorts on the highly regarded white sandy beaches and warm ocean waters surrounding the islands.
 
The beaches on the Zanzibar island are consistently included in the short list on many "best beaches of the world" websites, with the waters around the islands rated as a mecca for deep sea fishing, snorkeling and scuba diving.
 
There are festivals on the island, ruins to visit, shopping and a wide assortment of day and half day tours available.  There is something for everyone on Zanzibar which makes Zanzibar the “best one of a kind” destination in Africa.

Stone Town is usually explored by walking on your own and getting lost in the maze of streets, buildings and shops.  You won't stay lost for long though and you will usually end up somewhere interesting each time.

Zanzibar is a fabulous tour place to visit in conjunction with a visit to the game parks and/or a mountain trek.
 
The locals are very friendly and helpful, and many know some degree of English.
 
Generally a tour to Zanzibar includes some time (2-5 days) spent in Stone Town staying at a historical period hotel in the old quarters,  followed by some time (2+ days) at one of the beautiful beach resorts.
 
Zanzibar is very well served with ferries and planes from all over,  meaning it can be incorporated readily into the overall African Tour.
  
Generally, visitors are picked up upon arrival at the Zanzibar Airport and taken to their Stone Town Hotel.

The main market including the infamous fish and meat market is a must see but not for the squeamish.
  
After the Stone Town stay, visitors are transferred to the beach resort of their choosing about an hours drive away from Stone Town, to enjoy the multitude of beach activities.

From the beach resort, visitors are usually transferred to the airport to fly onto their next destination.

There are a number of tours available to partake in during your Stone Town stay such as spice tours, dolphin tours, tortoise and snorkeling tours, dhow tours, and tours of the Stone Town quarter itself taking in the museums and historical sites.  Visitors can also take in a football game, enjoy a massage or simply enjoy a drink by the pool.
 
Finding a place to sit down with a beverage and watch the sunset over the ocean seems to be an activity visitors quickly take a liking to.

 It is also interesting to visit Forodhani on the ocean front in the early evening, particularly on Sundays, to watch the Zanzibaris mingle and snack.
 
Breakfast is usually included at the hotel and there is a great assortment of restaurants in Stone Town to enjoy lunch and dinner.  Some Muslim establishments do not serve alcohol so it is best to ask before sitting down to order.

At the Beach Resorts, alcoholic drinks are served all the time and swimwear is the accepted attire however nudity is not recommended.

Breakfast is usually included at the resort but one can lunch or supper at any of the resorts along the beach. Of course if you opt for the all-inclusive accommodation, lunch and dinner are included at your resort.
